Inktober 2018

This year I decided to join the #inktober challenge to see if my imagination and creativity is strong enough to carry on until the end. I discovered, time is actually my big challenge. Even if I have some free time I can't finish one illustration per day, and this is because I don't like to hurry. I like to enjoy working for this project. After almost 25 years of working in animation with short deadlines, finding fast solutions, bad payments and actual "slavery", no weekends and short holidays no recognition and nice words for what you do, no opportunities to step up, I found out there is happiness in working for your own project and not on fast forward mode. I am happy I took a brake of this beautiful but mad kind of life called animation. I hope I can express myself better in this way.

New and old

I'm always in a hurry, almost running from place to place to be able to cross all the tasks from my daily "To-do List". Since some time I realized that I have to stop this crazy race and give myself more time and rise my eyes to discover this city I call it home. I love it and every day while I walk my dog around, I discover beautiful new and old buildings, covered in the scars left by the passage of time. The old is in harmony with the new in this city. The proof is also the image below, where, behind a new and colorful building, I found a part of the city's defense wall.

Wild chestnuts - 19.09.2018

Yet another inspiring day. Though outside was hot, 30 C degrees, it smell autumn. I took the usually round on the island together with my dog and I found some wild chestnuts on the ground. Luckily I was equipped with my watercolors and my Moleskine travel sketchbook so I decided to find a quiet spot for a sketch. I found a bench near the river and I proceeded with my work. I have to thank to my dog that it was patient enough to let me finish the watercolor. When it was done it came in my mind a beautiful poem I learned in the primary school and I added 2 stanzas I remembered well. The poem is written by George Topîrceanu and is called "Rapsodii de toamnā" (Autumn Rhapsody).
I tried to translate the stanzas for the non Romanian speakers. It sounds weird but I hope is helpful.

"... On the hilltop emerged the Autumn,
The fairy of the melancholic tune,
The terror of the flowers and the Lady
Of the Curcubits ...

Long is floating towards the valley,
As in an aura of glory,
Over her triumphal thigh
Her illusory veil ...

Schwemme - Brauerei, Halle (Saale)

Today was just the perfect day for an urban sketch. Therefore I just cross the street, with all my "arsenal" and under the quizzical brow of the passersby I put on paper the watercolor from below.

Back to my first love - studies after models

After more then 25 years of wanderings in the animation industry, I'm back to what I love most: sketches and studies after models. I'm happy I have not lost my ability to do it, but I think it's just like riding a bike - you never forget, it's there somewhere hidden in your head.

Fly agaric

It has so many names fly agaric, fly agarita, mad oriol or Devil's hat. It is the best well known mushroom in the world, even children know them from cartoons and illustrated books. I always felt so attracted by its colors and beauty and when, in an autumn day during my urban sketching session I found one, I decided to paint it.

Silent Night

As I do every year for the past 5 years I created a Christmas card to celebrate the end of the year and the beginning of a new and hopefully better one.
Because this year was so stressful and tiring I just feel the need to create a peaceful, silent, serene and, what I miss more, a white Christmas, atmosphere for my card. In my home city all Christmases were snowy and white.

Special effects

I'm impressed by special effects and every time I have the occasion I try to catch them on camera to create a library for later needs. Here are two slow-motion captures and a time-lapse.

 Fire

Waves and silky seaweeds.

Sunset at sea - I have professional cameras, tripods and lenses but I always end up using my phone. I was attacked by mosquitoes and it will be visible on film. The image slips slowly when the mosquitoes started the assault against my hands.

Art pieces I love

During my European wanderings I found some interesting statues, like the one below.
This is Hämmelsmarsch - Fountain of the March of the Sheep by Wil Lofy, located on the Grand Rue of Luxembourg City, Luxembourg.
Bronze sculpture showing a music band - an accordion player, a man with horn, a man with drum and a man with a tuba - with sheep. The sculpture also includes two children under an umbrella. The accordion player is a self portrait of the sculptor Wil Lofy.
Old Luxembourgian tradition - the local music club runs through the community to invite to a fair. They play the "Hämmelsmarsch" by Michel Lentz. Previously they took sheep with them.

Impressions from Rerik

When I see something that beautiful, I just take a picture. All my respect for those artists that can reproduce 100% what they see but, in my opinion, it is easier to just take a photo. That's a professional defect. We feel the need to exaggerate and we always have not enough time to enjoy a nice scene. The deadline is the killer.

My daughter, who at a smaller age was an ardent Spongebob fan, exclaimed: "Look there are so many "Patrick" on the shore!"

Twilight

Until now, I had to wake up early to be able to see a sunrise on the sea. I have seen a sunset on the sea before but it was the first time when it impressed me so deep. Everything was so calm and monumental. The only creatures that spoiled the moment, were the annoying mosquitos.

Mayday! A Troll is sinking!
